20th July 2023: You’ll often have heard it said that there’s no such thing as bad publicity. You might find it very difficult to find anyone at Betfair who agrees with that assessment this week. Its name has been splashed all over the newspapers, but not for good reasons. The well-known sports brand has been connected with a tragic case of suicide, and in a public statement, the coroner placed the blame for the incident squarely on Betfair. Luke Ashton sadly passed away in 2021 after running up more than £18,000 in debts gambling with Betfair. At one stage, he was placing up to one hundred bets per day.

In his full statement, coroner Ivan Cartwright said that Betfair continued to offer Ashton £5 free bets throughout this period and “failed to interact or intervene with Luke in any meaningful way” as the losses continued to accumulate. The ruling is believed to be the first of its kind. While gambling has been a factor in suicides in the past, this is the first time that “gambling disorder” has been listed on a death certificate. Cartwright believes that gambling controls across all of the Betfair sister sites remain inadequate and that further incidents of this kind are likely. Flutter Entertainment, which is ultimately responsible for Betfair, insists that changes to policy have been made since 2021 and that safeguards have been improved. The Gambling Commission concurs with this view and doesn’t plan to take action against Betfair based on the findings.

2nd June 2023: Betfair is one of the biggest names in the iGaming space, and this week they have made headlines as it has been reported that their operating company Flutter has been fined by the UK Gambling Commission for £490,000. This fine comes about because of Flutter’s failure to safeguard players, as they sent promotional notifications to customers who had opted out of such notifications. Kay Roberts (director of operations at the Gambling Commission) spoke on this, stating that there is no evidence that this notification was sent intentionally. However, they do take this breach very seriously. Ian Brown of Flutter (UK and Ireland) also gave a quote, saying that this push notification was an error, and they immediately took steps to rectify the issue once they were aware. Hopefully, Flutter and other operators can learn from this mistake and make sure it doesn’t happen again, creating a safer iGaming space for players.
