However, whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing depends on your take on whether there’s any such thing as bad publicity. This week, for example, Yahoo News picked up a story about a man causing “extensive damage” to a gaming machine in a Merkur Slots branch in Northampton.

There isn’t actually much to the story beyond what we’ve already told you, so the fact that Yahoo News picked it up is odd. All we know is that the man attacked a machine at 5pm on September 20th on the Merkur Slots branch in Abington Street, Northampton, and remains at large. There’s a CCTV image of the man to accompany the story, along with a Crimestoppers reference and a police incident number. It’s not exactly the true crime story of the century, but it seems that Merkur Slots is determined to bring this machine-smashing man to justice!

15th September 2023: We spend a lot of time talking about Merkur Slots and its physical venues when we provide these news updates about the company, but we spend much less time talking about Eyas Gaming, which is the company behind Merkur Slots. It’s an ambitious casino network company, and it has a standalone website of its own away from the Merkur Slots website. On that website, it occasionally posts news updates – and there was a news update on there which caught our eye this week.

Eyas Gaming is excited to announce a new partnership with a company called Lance, which is based in Brazil and is described as a “sports media company.” Lance is further described as offering sports betting and iGaming services with connections to the world’s top providers. Don’t get too excited about the idea of sports betting coming to Merkur Slots any time soon, though- Eyas Gaming sees this as an opportunity to further its involvement in the rapidly expanding Latin American iGaming scene. The press release makes it sound like Eyas will be working with Lance to create a new sports betting platform (entitled “Lance Betting,” which isn’t an especially original choice) for players in Brazil rather than the development having anything to do with players in the UK. Still, though, if Eyas Gaming now has sports betting facilities, why not add them to Merkur Slots and see if the idea catches on?

6th September 2023: Yahoo News has announced that Merkur Slots has signed a ten-year lease on an office space in Milton Keynes; this may not be the most interesting news item, but at least it makes a refreshing change from the usual headlines that surround the gambling company’s bid to take over the UK high street on a 24 / 7 basis. Before getting into the details of the lease on the giant office space, Yahoo News introduced Merkur as a gambling firm which is one of the most experienced and biggest gambling companies in Europe. To date, the company operates three family entertainment centres, three bingo clubs, and 210 locations where slot machine fans can partake in one of their favourite pastimes. In addition to all of this, Merkur Slots also operates its own online casino and supplies casino games to other online platforms.

Merkur will move its head office into the second floor of Matrix House, which can be found on North Fourth Street in central Milton Keynes. Champagne corks were presumably popping in the office of the property consultancy agency, Kirkby Diamonds, once the new lease was signed. Following the signing of the lease, the head of agency at Kirkby Diamonds, Matthew Bowen, revealed that there are only a limited number of enquiries on properties in the 8,000 – 12,000 sq ft every year, and there were only four serious enquiries for the empty space in Matrix House; he was delighted to see Merkur move into the space, given the illustrious reputation of the company.

24th August 2023: If you have been following our Merkur Slots news updates (and why wouldn’t you, they’re riveting) you won’t be surprised to hear that the gambling firm has been upsetting some local MPs. This time, it is the prospect of an adult gaming centre in Palmers Green that has been causing quite a stir among residents and officials. One local MP expressed that he is extremely concerned about the potential arrival of Merkur in Palmers Green, but as reported by the Enfield Dispatch, he isn’t the only one who wants to give Merkur the boot before the company has put down roots in the town. Even though the council was convinced that the adult gaming centre would be a good addition to the town, 1270 people have signed a petition in a bid to prove that Merkur isn’t welcome.

Merkur still has to convince the Council’s planning department to give them permission to change the use of premises on 369 – 371 Greens Lane; given that there has been such a public outcry and that there are four other gambling companies operating in the local area, the planning application could very well be rejected. Some of the residents believe that the opening of Merkur Slots will lead to an increase in crime in the area, while others are quite irrationally fearful that it will lead to children being harmed. While it is reasonable to expect an uptick in crime, given that it is a gambling location for adults aged 18+, we aren’t overly sure how children are being roped into the protest.

10th August 2023: On the 9th of August, the news website News Shopper revealed that Merkur Slots have been denied their 24 / 7 opening times in Bexley due to “drug dealing fears”. Now, it isn’t uncommon for city planners, city councils, residents, and police departments to bemoan and try to block such opening hours over fears of antisocial behaviour and noise pollution; for the last few months, our news updates on the online and retail low-stake gambling firm has almost wholly documented Merkur’s fight to provide late night entertainment on the high street. However, fears around drug dealing sparked by extended opening times seem a little out there, and it just goes to show how much of a dim view people in Bexley have on gamblers who still prefer to imbibe in their favourite pastimes on the high street.

We are pretty sure that drug dealers don’t need adult entertainment centres to peddle their wares; they can just as easily do it on any dimly lit street corner. Nevertheless, the people of Bexley believe that extended opening hours will send the town centre into the gutter; if that is all it takes, it is safe to say that Bexley is already on the precipice. After the opening hour refusal which was agreed upon during a planning committee meeting on the 3rd of August, the Merkur Slots location on Bellegrove Road will only be allowed to open from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. During the meeting, concerns were also raised about fly-tipping and the adjoining alleyway being used as a toilet.

28th July 2023: Merkur Slots doesn’t always get its way when requesting extended opening hours; however, it would seem that they have had a good run this week; opening hour restrictions have been lifted in Taunton, Stockton and Worcester, and the gambling firm is currently making good progress in convincing Teesside council to grant them extended opening hours which would see the low stakes gambling centre open for 21 hours each day. However, it has been far from a 100% positive news week for the gambling firm, especially after a local Bracknell News website printed the details of how staff in the Bracknell branch of Merkur Slots were attacked in an attempted robbery. The incident occurred on the 9th of July between 3:50 am and 4:10 am, during the moonlit robbery, one member of staff was assaulted by three offenders, who also caused a significant amount of distress to two punters.

The Thames Valley Police are still on the lookout for the three offenders, and they are hoping that witnesses will come forward and shed light on the identity of the attempted robbers. However, the CCTV footage only captured the image of one of the attackers, you can see it for yourself by reading the Bracknell News article on the incident, where you will see that if anyone is the epitome of a stereotypical down-and-out reprobate, it is him. Something tells us that Merkur still won’t change its view that the 24-hour opening times are a good idea, no matter how many of its staff members are assaulted.

12th July 2023: Merkur Slots may have finally started to see 24-hour locations as too big of an ask in some cities and towns in the UK. On the 3rd of July, Worcester News announced that the gambling firm has requested permission to keep their adult gaming centre in the Cross in Worcester open until 6 am, which seems like a far more reasonable request. However, the gambling company did attempt to sell the idea of a 24-hour gambling centre in Worcester a little over a year ago; the request was quickly rebuked by councillors and city planners, under the belief that opening during such unsociable hours would only lead to antisocial behaviour and the facilitation of harmful gambling behaviour.

Merkur may be able to float the idea of extended opening hours a little easier at this location as it has been open for 18 months with no noise or antisocial behaviour complaints. For the last six months, the location has been permitted to stay open until 2 am; however, the gambling company still believes the 2 am closing time is cutting into their profit margins.
