Given that it’s owned by a government body, you’d have thought that it would know better than to permit access to players in the UK. Can Play Casino – an iGaming site with a very permissive name, is the only member of the Northstar Bets sister sites family that we’re aware of. We’re not totally ruling out the idea that more may exist, but they don’t show up in searches if they do. For a time, we didn’t even think Can Play Casino was one of the Northstar Bets sister sites – we thought Northstar Bets operated alone. However, even though Can Play Bets doesn’t advertise its connection with the Abenaki Council of Wolinak, our understanding is that it’s also, essentially, a government-issued casino website. Such a thing would be unthinkable in the UK. Can Play Casino is piled high with great slots games, many of which are well-known names that are popular all over the world. There’s nothing special about it in terms of layout, presentation or promotions, but it looks like a slots site that ticks all of the basic boxes.

From some of what we’ve already written about Northstar Bets above, you’ve hopefully got the sense that this site isn’t like ninety-nine per cent of other casinos and betting sites out there. The fact that it’s run by a local authority is astonishing from a UK point of view – try to imagine Manchester City Council running an online casino and the stink it would cause. The site is a little plain and is intended more as a sports betting site than a casino, but there’s a casino attached to it all the same. Let’s find out if it’s a good one.

Northstar Bets Welcome Offer

If you want to play casino games at Northstar Bets, you can capitalise on a welcome promotion that’s matched at 100% up to £1000 and comes with up to one hundred bonus spins. The offer is open to anyone who deposits £10 or more, but you’ll only get fifty bonus spins rather than the full one hundred if you deposit less than £50. The bonus, plus anything won from free spins, is subject to a playthrough requirement of x30. That’s a smidge below the average for welcome bonuses, so the terms of the promotion are fair and competitive.

If it’s sports betting that’s drawn you to Northstar Bets, the offer on the table is a £100 matched deposit bonus, with the 100 bonus spins from the casino welcome promotion thrown in anyway as a side serving. The bonus is awarded automatically when you place a bet of £100 or less on any sporting matter with odds of -200 or higher. There’s no playthrough requirement on the matched deposit bonus, but anything you’ve won from the spins still has to be wagered x30 before it can be withdrawn.

Ongoing Promotions

Northstar Bets isn’t a site that’s short on promotions, but the VIP Program is the promotion that the site is most proud of. There are four tiers to the program – Gold Star, Platinum Star, Diamond Star and True North Star. Gold Star players get a dedicated VIP team to support them, a new welcome bonus, enhanced cashback offers and more. Platinum Star members get a dedicated specific VIP account manager, VIP promotions and bonuses on their birthdays. At Diamond Star, players also get bonuses on the anniversary of their joining the casino and further enhanced cashback and rewards. The benefits of True North VIP are kept a secret until you get there. All of this sounds wonderful, so it’s a shame that the site says absolutely nothing about how players might get from one rank to the next.

Away from the VIP rewards, Northstar Bets also offers £20 in free bets for everyone who spends £50 or more on the casino’s game of the week. Any deposit of £20 or more attracts ten free spins (redeemable twice per day), and members of the Bonus Bet Club get a £20 free bet every Monday. Other promotions are added or removed all the time, so the promotions tab is worth checking regularly – as are the terms and conditions of the individual promotions.

Pros and Cons of Northstar Bets

Pros: The terms and conditions of the Northstar Bets welcome promotion are fair, so players have a decent chance of being able to withdraw real cash after accepting the bonus. The coverage provided by the casino’s sportsbook is extensive, and while the number of slots at the casino isn’t massive, it includes some great titles.

Cons: We can’t judge the quality or value of the Northstar Bets VIP scheme because the casino doesn’t provide us with enough information to do so. Withdrawals don’t appear to be faster than three business days under any circumstances. Live chat only works if you’re already logged into your account, and the licence that covers the casino’s iGaming activities is weak.

Top Games at Northstar Bets

It’s obvious from the layout of Northstar Bets that casino games play a big part in the way the site operates, but it’s still supposed to be a sports betting site first and foremost. It’s a fairly serious sports betting site, too, offering parlay bets and other kinds of technical betting. As this is a North American betting site, though, you won’t see your usual favourite sports dominating the listings. Instead, the top sports are NHL (ice hockey), NBA (basketball) and MLB (baseball). Most sports that you might be interested in are there if you go looking for them, though and entertainment matters and politics are also covered.

On the casino side of things, the site outlines what it feels are the best of its offerings in the “Northstar Picks” section in the middle of its homepage. Northstar Elite Blackjack, which is a live blackjack game exclusive to this platform, is the overall top game. Mega Fire Blaze Roulette takes second place, after which the top slots game is Age of the Gods: God of Storms, which is one of the many entries in Playtech’s legendary Age of the Gods series. Mega Moolah, the equally legendary millionaire maker slots game from Microgaming, takes second place. New titles are added to the casino’s portfolio regularly.

Withdrawal Processing and Support

Northstar Bets has scored reasonably well in most categories in this review up until now, but this is where things are going to change. There appear to be very few ways of getting money out of the casino, but as there isn’t a payments or banking page, it’s very hard to be sure. The only payment provider logos that appear on the website are Interac, iDebit and InstaDebit, all of which are less convenient than, for example, a debit card or an e-wallet. The casino says that it turns most withdrawal requests around in three business days, which isn’t fast. In an attempt to
be helpful, the FAQ tells players that player feedback indicates that Interac is likely to be the fastest of the available methods.

Customer Support and Licensing

Live chat is available at Northstar Bets, but only if you’re already logged into your account. Not being able to log into your account is one of the most likely reasons for you to need to speak to customer support, so that’s not a smart arrangement. However, you could instead call +1(877) 870-5758 or send an email to [email protected] instead. The casino is fully licensed and regulated by the Kahnawake Gaming Commission, which is fine and dandy in Canada but offers no protection if you’re anywhere else in the world. This same licence covers the Northstar Bets sister sites (or sister site, as the case may be).

Northstar Bets – The Verdict

We can see Northstar Bets being popular in its home territory of Quebec, Canada, where iGaming options are comparatively limited. When you put it head to head with the best sports betting and casino sites in the world, though, it’s a long way short. The promotions aren’t explained well, the withdrawals aren’t fast enough, and the iGaming portfolio isn’t deep enough. It’s a solid little site, though, and if we were a Canadian website, we think we’d probably give it our seal of approval. We’re not, though, which means that we can’t.
