VGW Malta Limited is a casino network company with only two casinos – and only one that the majority of players are likely to have heard of. The casino sites are covered by a licence that their parent company holds with the Malta Gaming Authority. The MGA licence is generally thought of as respectable and trustworthy, but it’s insufficient to gain access to the UK market. Because of that, it’s impossible to play at these casinos if you’re based in the UK. Chumba Casino will prevent any attempt to register an account, and Global Poker will flat out refuse to connect.

If you’re based in the UK, you should only play at casinos covered by a valid UK Gambling Commission licence. VGW Malta Limited’s casinos are not covered. 

Chumba Casino

Chumba Casino has been online since 2012. VGW Malta has only existed in its current format since 2016. That means Chumba Casino must have had a past life before its parent company formed, although it’s possible that VGW Malta was born out of the success of Chumba Casino. There isn’t enough information available online for us to make that determination. In any event, Chumba Casino is a long-standing site with more than a decade of experience under its belt and an interesting focus. The site boldly and proudly states on its homepage that it’s “America’s #1 social casino experience.” Famously, the United States of America’s laws do not permit online casinos or slots websites. How, then, can Chumba Casino be online and target American players? The answer to that question lies with its “sweepstakes” model. Technically speaking, players at Chumba Casino don’t play with real money. They play with “sweeps coins,” which can be bought with real money. If anything is won with these “sweeps coins,” players can convert the coins back into real money and withdraw it. If all of this sounds like a way to circumvent US gambling laws, it’s because it is. However, a loophole is a loophole and Chumba Casino has been exploiting it for a very long time.

It’s theoretically possible that Chumba Casino could circumvent gambling laws in the United Kingdom in the same way, but it’s just as possible that the UK Gambling Commission would respond by ordering the site to be blocked. That might explain why Chumba Casino and VGW Malta Limited have never chanced their arm by trying to appeal to players in the UK. Any attempt to register at Chumba Casino from a UK IP address will be blocked. In truth, though, we suspect that UK players aren’t missing much. Chumba Casino features fewer than one hundred casino games, most of which have been developed in-house. The currency exchange would likely be seen as too much messing around for not enough reward by UK players, and so this brightly-coloured and law-bending casino would probably struggle to find a place in the UK market even if it weren’t geo-blocked.

Global Poker

Global Poker is another VGW casino that targets players in the United States of America. This casino network company might be called VGW Malta Limited, but it has virtually no interest in Malta or, indeed, the rest of Europe. It seems to exist solely to target a market which, in theory, it shouldn’t be allowed to target. Global Poker is even more tightly locked-down than Chumba Casino is. Chumba Casino’s website at least allows European or UK-based browsers to have a look around the site before telling them that they’re not welcome. Global Poker imposes a total shutout. Players who attempt to access the site from the UK are redirected to an “unavailable in your location” page, which also informs us that Global Poker is only available in the United States of America and Canada. This is possible for the same reason that it’s possible for Chumba Casino to operate there – it uses a “sweep coins” intermediary currency, which means that the site isn’t technically giving or taking bets with real money. However, the site notes that there are exemptions in Washington State, USA and Quebec, Canada. Those locations must have become wise to the obvious attempt at a workaround.

Without being able to see Global Poker, there isn’t much to say about it, but we know from VGW Malta Limited’s licence in Malta that Global Poker is or was attached to a Global Casino. No site exists at the globalcasino.com web address today, and there’s little evidence that any such casino ever existed, but the record is there on the casino network company’s MGA licence. We’re unsure why Global Casino would have been closed down to leave Global Poker standing alone. Perhaps VGW decided that Chumba Casino was so successful that a second casino site was no longer warranted. Whatever the reason, Chumba Casino and Global Poker are the only active casino sites on this unusual network.

About VGW Malta Limited

Earlier on, we mentioned that VGW Malta was formed in 2016. We know that because the information is recorded on Open Corporates and also with the Malta Gaming Authority. However, we know that at least one of the company’s online casino sites is older than that. Chumba Casino has been online since 2014. There are only two possibilities here; either Chumba Casino had different ownership when the casino opened, or VGW Malta Limited was formed off the back of Chumba Casino. We suspect that the latter is true, but there’s so little evidence online that it’s impossible to prove it.

Almost every casino network company that sets itself up in Malta does so with the intention of obtaining a licence from the Malta Gaming Authority and then branching out across Europe. In many cases, companies do it as a stepping stone towards getting what they really want: a UK Gambling Commission licence and access to the highly lucrative UK market. Based on those criteria, VGW Malta Limited is not like most casino network companies. It couldn’t care less about Europe – its sites don’t even do any business there. Instead, they focus on the American and Canadian markets. Yes, those are the same American and Canadian markets that have laws in place preventing any company from offering online casinos to their citizens. We’ve covered the workaround that VGW casinos have found for this above. It’s not a particularly clever workaround, but in the case of Chumba Casino, it’s been working for more than ten years. How long it will continue to work for might be another matter, but for now, VGW Malta Limited makes most – if not all – of its money from territories that remain off-limits to most other casino network companies.

The VGW Malta team comprises around four hundred people who allegedly work between several offices all over the world. Those staff are said to believe in a “work hard, play hard” ethos. We can’t find any evidence of any VGW Malta Limited offices other than the company’s head office in Malta, but that doesn’t mean that none exist. Those four hundred people are a mix of game designers and developers who are responsible not only for maintaining Chumba Casino and Global Poker but also for the games on both sites. VGA casinos do have a limited number of third-party games from recognised providers, but they provide most of their games library themselves. This reduces dependency on others, but it also means the sites are unable to provide players with most of the world’s most popular online casino games. All in all, the VGW Malta Limited casino proposition is a strange one. Its casinos are strange, its business model is strange, and its games portfolio is strange. Still, something must be working for the company if it’s managed to stay active for more than ten years, so who are we to question its methods?
